CLYST HYDON V D.RICHARDS X1 13/7/8 (Friendly)
Skipper S.Hodgson (Hoggy) decided to pack his team this week with some of the stars of the 1st X1...
K. Sercombe was the surprise inclusion in what was 'on paper' a strong side, to take on what appeared to be a below par 'Dick Richards XI' team constituting 5 under 16's and 6 over 50's!
Playing out a timed game and batting first Clyst opened up with Sercombe and Lewis to an under 16 s opening attack, to their surprise the new ball was swinging and they under estimated these young lads, firstly Sercombe was bowled by a beauty from B.Hingley for a duck and the bowlers soon followed up with another big wicket belonging to no other than Treasurer Russel Corney, however, batting sensibly C. Lewis and D. Nandana took the score from a dreadful 22 for 2 to 227 with a superb stand of 205 for the 3rd wicket...
After the skipper decided Lewis had done enough he requested Lewis to retire on 118 n.o. (Yes - Done up like a kipper! - ED) and Nandana eventually fell for 125 leaving Clyst with a fantastic score of 285 for 6 in 40 overs.
In reply the game initially seemed like it was heading for an early conclusion, with the visitors losing wickets very quickly, until a very stubborn and annoying 9th wicket partnership of 64 between veterans A. Rocket (34 n.o.) and K. Wood (17 n.o.) (please note that their average combined age was 153! - ED)
These 'aged' experts managed to see off everything Clyst had to offer (including Alice Johnson! - Aged 14) to ensure that they weren't all bowled out and ended up with 179 for 8...
Despite the Clyst skipper bringing on his 1st XI 'star bowlers' they were no match and looked very ordinary - It was a good job the 1st XI skipper was not watching!!!
A great game in the end and everyone enjoyed K. Sercombe's impression of Billy Bowden while he was taking a turn to umpire!
