Upottery II vs Clyst Hydon II, 4/7/09

Clyst IIs picked up maximum points with a hard-fought win at bottom side Upottery II, who belied their lowly league position with a gritty performance.

Clyst were invited to bat first after losing the toss and were soon in trouble against Simon Bath (2-22) at 60-4 from 20 overs. Paul Garnham (87no) & Simon Hodgson rescued the visitors' innings with a steady stand of 66. With the overs running out, Garnham then cut loose and - with good support from Will Moore (17) - managed to push the score up over 200. Garnham's unbeaten 87 included three consecutive 6s off Nigel Wyatt's final over!

In reply, Upottery lost wickets steadily throughout their innings, but were always up with the required run rate setting up a potentially interesting finish. The unorthodox spin bowling of Mark Doyle (4-51) & some solid catching in the deep combined to leave the home side hanging on at 9 wickets down, but tailender M.Frost (31no) continued to chase the win when many sides would've shut up shop for the draw. Ultimately it was a run-out mix up which handed Clyst the crucial tenth wicket and a full 20pts victory.
